About 90,000 more Americans are expected to die by June 1, a leading forecasting institution reports, from COVID-19-related causes. The prediction comes when the U.S. expects the next two days to reach 500,000 fatalities.
It remains a mystery when the pandemic will end. Dr. Anthony Fauci says it is “possible” that masks will still be worn by Americans in 2022. It’s not seen that way by Marty Makary, who teaches at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Bloomberg School of Public Health.
I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April on the current trajectory, enabling Americans to resume normal life,”At the current trajectory, I expect Covid will be mostly gone by April, allowing Americans to resume normal life,”
Meanwhile, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) of the University of Washington, the organization that predicts all those extra casualties, also warns that the planet may never achieve herd immunity.
IHME estimates that by the end of May, 589,197 Americans would have died. The good news is that the institute predicts that deaths will drop to less than 500 a day by then, and if Americans are cautious about wearing masks, the number could be even smaller. The U.S. currently has an average of around 2,000 casualties a day.
“While it’s possible to reach herd immunity by next winter, it seems increasingly unlikely we will do so, and in light of that we all need to shift our expectations,” says IHME.
