Futa to establish teaching hospital
The vice Chancellor of the federal university of technology akure in conjunction with other staffs and bodies has earlier raised the flag for establishment of a teaching hospital at the campus.
A bill has been passed to the Senate for approval under the supervision of Senator Ayo Akinyelure, representing Ondo Central Senatorial District with the Senate president Senator Ahmed Lawan presiding.
Outcome of the Senate meeting
With the launch of the School of Health and Health Technology in the 2015/2016 academic session, the process for the establishment of the FUTA Teaching Hospital was initiated. This followed the approval given to the University by the National Universities Commission to create in December 2014 a School of Health and Health Technology with programs in Basic Medical Sciences. The school has anatomy, physiology and biomedical technology programmes. Eventually, the school would integrate the proposed College of Medicine and Hospital of Teaching.
Project funding will be provided through the Tertiary Education Fund (TETFUND) with the approval of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) in May 2019, chaired by President Muhammad Buhari.
Vice Chancellor Professor Joseph Fuwape said FUTA had in its founding mandate the School of Health Sciences, which included the College of Medicine. He said the FUTA Teaching Hospital’s implementation will contribute to efforts to improve Nigerians’ living standards by enhancing Medicare through the training of medical doctors and allied professionals.
He said the admission quota burden will also be eliminated from existing teaching hospitals by universities that are ready and able to operate medical programs. Recent cases of public health problems such as Ebola virus, Lassa fever and Covid-19 have further exposed the need to pay more attention to health and medical training, according to the Vice Chancellor. In terms of orthodox medicine, even the most advanced of countries battled pitifully against the Covid-19 pandemic and that is an eye opener for us as a nation to rejig our health system in terms of both facilities and workers. A FUTA medicine college will undoubtedly be a step in the right direction.
