UFC superstar Conor McGregor claims he would be interested in trying to buy either Manchester United or Scottish giants Celtic and feels he could do ‘big things’ if he moves into ownership. The Irishman, who recently sold a majority stake in his Proper No. Twelve whiskey company for $600million (£425m), is one of the highest earning sports personalities in the world. However, he still has some way to go if he wants to match United’s current owners, the Glazers, while the club itself is valued in excess of £3billion by Forbes.

Nevertheless, the UFC fighter continues to talk up the prospect of trying to buy United, having tweeted last month: ‘Hey guys, I’m thinking about buying Manchester United! What do you think?’

McGregor’s tweet coincided with the backlash from United’s attempt to join the European Super League and the animosity from the club’s fans towards their owners has only increased since, with last week’s Premier League clash against Liverpool forced to be postponed due to protests at Old Trafford. He has now doubled down on his interest in buying United, suggesting it is a real possibility, while he even claims conversations have been had about a takeover of Celtic.

‘A conversation came up regarding Celtic first to be honest, to acquire shares from Dermot Desmond,’ said McGregor during a Twitter Q&A after being asked if he was actually going to buy United. ‘I am certainly interested in acquiring a sports team at some stage!

‘Both Celtic and Man United are teams I like for sure. But I am open. I feel I could do big things for a club.’ Fellow Irishman Desmond, who has a net worth of £1.8billion, is the largest individual shareholder in Celtic – and, intriguingly, previously held a stake in United before selling to the Glazers in 2005. The Scottish side, who lost their title this season, would be far more affordable for McGregor, particularly with the Glazers determined to resist any offers to buy United.
