Edinson Cavani has posted a cryptic message about his Manchester United future, prompting various theories from fans.
Cavani, 34, is out of contract at United in the summer after he joined last year on a one-year deal following his release by Paris Saint-Germain. The Uruguayan has exceeded many people’s expectations at United, proving himself a dynamic and reliable option up front and scoring 10 goals in all competitions.
Despite suffering with injury problems that seemed to spell the end of his Old Trafford stay, Cavani has returned to form lately and hit three goals in his past four United appearances. But his future remains in doubt amid suggestions he wants to return home to South America, with Boca Juniors a possible destination.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted it may be hard to keep Cavani for an extra year and many expect the 34-year-old to depart.
On the eve of a crucial Europa League semi-final against Roma, Cavani took to Instagram to say simply: “Lo único que sé es q daré el máximo” — which translates to “the only thing I know is that I will give my best.”
Many United fans commented, taking the post as a sign that Cavani is close to the exit door, though others implored him to stay at the club.
“With the pandemic it’s not been possible to have friends over, family over without quarantine. You can’t travel.
“He’s not been able to experience the fantastic culture in Manchester and in and around in England, and he is contemplating and thinking hard and long about what he wants to do and I understand.
“He knows what we want; I want him in Old Trafford when it’s full, Stretford End scoring a diving header like today. There’s no better feeling, so let’s wait and see.”
