Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists Manchester United know what they want in the summer transfer window after Manchester City were finally crowned champions.

United’s 2-1 home defeat to Leicester secured City’s fourth championship in the last eight seasons and Solskjaer admitted United ‘need a couple more to strengthen the squad’ ahead of next season.

Following the renewal of Edinson Cavani’s contract, United are expected to move for a centre-back and a forward, while they are also in the market for a midfielder and a back-up goalkeeper.

United remain interested in the Real Madrid defender Raphael Varan e and have been monitoring Villarreal centre half Pau Torres. Declan Rice has expressed interest in joining United to England teammates who play at the club and United have refused to rule out a move for Jadon Sancho.

“We have [held meetings], that’s a long process and we know what we want to do,” Solskjaer said when asked about United’s recruitment meetings. “I think, first of all, congratulations to Manchester City for winning the league, very worthy champions, got to hold our hands up and say that.

“But that’s where we want to be and we’re not there yet. They’ve put the bar where it is and it’s up to us now to take the next step.”

Mason Greenwood levelled after Luke Thomas’ 13th-minute opener but Caglar Soyuncu nodded in Leicester’s winner from a second-half corner to inflict a fifth home league defeat on United this season.

“It took some time to get going but after they scored it looked like we dropped our shoulders, the nerves went and we started playing,” Solskjaer added. “And we scored a fantastic goal. I’m very pleased with the performance.

“Amad very good, Elanga will remember this moment, loads of enthusiasm, so very pleased.”
