Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton is set to rejoin Manchester United on a free transfer this summer. The 35-year-old started his career at Old Trafford but he failed to make a single appearance for the Red Devils due to the presence of Edwin van der Sar at the club. Heaton forged a Premier League career for himself at Burnley, where he spent six seasons before joining Aston Villa. The Cheshire-born stopper was bought as first choice at Villa Park but he suffered a devastating knee injury after his £8million move to the Midlands.

Villa turned to Emi Martinez last summer, which has starved Heaton of first team football and United believe he can provide good back-up to David De Gea and Dean Henderson next season.

Both Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira are expected to leave the club this summer, while Lee Grant could also follow. That leaves United short on back-up and Heaton is set to join to provide exactly that, according to the Telegraph. Heaton is out of contract next month, meaning United will not need to pay a fee to sign the veteran. Heaton has three caps for England and was a back-up option in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2018 World Cup.
