Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes promise to Edinson Cavani if he stays at Manchester United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reiterated he would ‘love’ Edinson Cavani to stay at Manchester United next season despite the likelihood of the Uruguayan’s departure.

Cavani took his tally for the season to 12 goals with a matchwinning performance in the 6-2 Europa League semi-final first leg thrashing of Roma but is approaching the final two months of his contract.

United have the option of an additional year on Cavani’s deal but there has to be a mutual agreement between the club and the player and Cavani’s father claimed he wants to leave in the summer.

Cavani, 34, has struggled to adapt to living in Manchester amid the pandemic and Solskjaer has attempted to persuade him to extend his stay with United until next year.

“He was out for seven months wihtout playing football for a long, long time before he came to us,” Solskjaer said. “He’s had a couple of injuries and he’s worked hard to get back fit and has shown his qualities.

“He knows my feelings. I’d love to have him for another year, we’ve spoken about it. This year has been very difficult but I’ve promised him Old Trafford and Manchester is a different place without fans in the stadium, he must try to get that feeling onside. Manchester is a fantastic place to live, I’m doing my best. Let’s see.

“Nights like this, hopefully we can get to the final and hopefully he can see himself being here for another year.

“We don’t have to sell the club to him, it’s about the feeling he gets, how he feels coming in every day, the environment we’re creating, the team we’re creating that he’s part of.
