Manchester United are concerned that Eduardo Camavinga’s preference is to join Real Madrid or Barcelona, according to reports.
United are understood to have already made an approach to the midfielder’s agent, Jonathan Barnett, this summer.
Camavinga is considered one of the best young midfielders in Europe and has attracted interested from several clubs including Madrid, Barca, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain.
According to The Telegraph, United are in the running to sign Camavinga but believe the player is holding out for a move to La Liga instead.
The report also claims that United have made the signing of a new central defender their top priority, with Raphael Varane being Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-choice target.
United also face strong competition from Chelsea, with Petr Cech said to be the driving force behind the club’s efforts to strike a deal with Rennes.
Cech played a key role in Chelsea’s successful pursuit of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy last summer and his strong relationship with Rennes’ hierarchy could be influential once again.
Camavinga is out of contract next summer and Rennes are understood to be willing to accept a €30 million (£25.5m) offer before the end of the current transfer window.
Speaking last month, Rennes manager Bruno Genesio indicated that the club are open to selling Camavinga this summer.
‘We have already stressed several times that we cannot afford to remain in this situation concerning an international player like him,’ Genesio said.
It’s part of a career to have important decisions to make, he has a very important one [decision] to make for his future, and we at the club also have our interests to defend.
‘I hope we find a solution that everyone is satisfied with.
